Degree in Physiotherapy

The degree in physiotherapy is adjusted to the Bologna Process since 2008. The 240 ECTS curriculum plan is competence based, that is focused on the development of the competencies which are relevant to the newly graduate physiotherapist, in order to practice physiotherapy with quality and autonomously. The professional profile includes 9 competence areas, organized in 3 main dimensions: intervention cycle; organizational management; Personal and Professional Development. These are in accordance with the World Physical Therapy Confederation and the Australian Standards for Physiotherapy. After demonstration of competency in a simulated environment, the students have, from year 1, the opportunity to learn in diverse and international clinical contexts through Clinical Education. There is a highly qualified teaching team, who contribute to a constructive learning environment. Collaborative learning and peer feedback are frequently used, as is the collaboration with students form other degree programs in the school. Throughout the four years, students are also invited to collaborate in research and innovation projects, as well as voluntary activities, contributing to the health and wellbeing of the community.

Objetives

The objectives of the degree program are: To qualify physiotherapists who are scientifically and technically competent, with a humanist and reflexive profile, prepared to act in a variety of contexts, multi-disciplinary teams and who respond effectively to change. In addition, focused on the needs, potential and expectations of clients, committed to the professional values, guaranteeing the best practices and their own personal and professional continuous development.

The ESS-IPS graduate physiotherapist must demonstrate: the integration of knowledge, its understanding and interpretation; technical ability; attitude and professional (and ethical) behaviour in problem solving; preparation to practice physiotherapy autonomously, ability to collaborate in the development of the profession, in research projects, and in community projects which benefit the health of the community as well as in the education of new health professionals.
