MSC in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

About:

The MSc is a professionally-oriented programme, which has been organised in partnership with the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) - Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública- (ENSP), and Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (FCM) and the Setúbal Polytechnic Institute - School of Health Care (ESS/IPS).

This MSc is the only programme in this area in Portugal with accreditation by the International Federation of Orthopedic Physical Therapists (IFOMPT) and part of the IFOMPT Aproved Learning Institutions.

The overall aim of the programme is to provide the professionally qualified physiotherapists with the opportunity to extend their knowledge and professional expertise in musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, and prepare them for an autonomous, reflexive and specialized patient centred practice. The course builds upon qualified physiotherapists’ current knowledge and experience and aims to extend their knowledge and understanding of advanced clinical skills and develop a critical understanding of the scientific basis of physiotherapy intervention and to implement an evidence-based practice, considering its effectiveness and the benefits perceived by both patients and physiotherapists.?Finally, the course also provides the opportunity for students to broaden their clinical skills across the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy and primary health care physiotherapy, and to critically evaluate and contribute to research in these clinical areas.

Aims

The course builds upon qualified physiotherapists’ current knowledge and experience and aims to provide them with:


a. A deep knowledge and understanding of current theories (biological, physiological, biomechanical, social, behavioural and psychological) that underpin contemporary physiotherapy practice within an evidence-based framework, in musculoskeletal conditions (Graduate attributes- 1.Knowledge and Understanding; 2. b. Advanced clinical reasoning skills and capabilities that help students to develop a specialized clinical practice within a collaborative patient centred care framework (Graduate attributes- 1. Knowledge and Understanding; 2. Clinical Problem Solving and decision making; 3. Communication Skills, professional attitude, behaviour and ethics; 4. Practical skills – Technical);

c. Critical appraisal skills that help students in questioning and rethinking their perceptions and practice in light of relevant research findings in musculoskeletal conditions (Graduate attributes- 1. Knowledge and Understanding; 2. Clinical Problem Solving and decision making);

d. Reflective competences that help students to review, challenge and critically evaluate their practice and to inform learning needs within a framework of professional knowledge and lifelong learning (Graduate attributes- 3. Communication Skills, professional attitude, behaviour and ethics; 4. Practical skills – Technical);

e. Advanced interactional skills to work effectively and collaboratively with patients/ clients, careers and other professionals in a shared decision-making framework (Graduate attributes- 2. f. Capability to work according to the ethical and legal principles of the profession in a framework of professional responsibility and accountability Graduate attributes- 3. Communication Skills, professional attitude, behaviour and ethics);
